They came back

Ken and Michele have forgiven me!!! All is well with the world! They came back the next day so that they could say hello to Lenny (he was working when they "dropped by"). We had a nice afternoon sharing with each other about our lives.

They are definately Super Cool Cousins. Not that my other cousins aren't cool, but.... ok, I will stop before offend yet another cousin and have to blog my ordeal.

Happy Thanksgiving

You know how sometimes some holiday celebrations just seem extra fun??? This Thanksgiving was one of those celebrations. Lenny was on duty today so any chance of an extended family dinner was out of the question. But, the families of the crew members all came in and we made dinner at the fire station.

It was sooooo fun and so good. 4 crew members...4 families....so fun. It was Lenny, Jacob, Sarah and I, Dale, Christy, Conner and Emily Platt, Wade and Kimmie Miller and Wade's mom, and John and Kelly, Taylor and Hannah Deyoe. I hadn't seen Christy in forever, and I had never met Kelly or Kimmie before today. It was like being with family. So comfortable and so easy.

The kids played outside in the "backyard" of the fire station. They had bikes, scooters, and super cool ride-on cars. The grown-ups laughed and took lots of pics.

I am so thankful that my husband has a job that will allow something like this. If he has to work a holiday, I am grateful that we can still share it with him. Granted he is away from home a lot but, days like today make it ok. He works with a great bunch of guys who really care about each other. I can see why he loves going to work and, too where all of the great stories come from.

So, thank you to C6 for making this Thanksgiving super wonderful. And, the turkey was yummy!

Sarah is 6

Last week Sarah turned 6 years old. I won't go on about how time flies, etc. But, she has been asking for almost one year to have her ears pierced. We told her to wait until her next birthday and if she still wanted it done, we would let her. I thought she would forget about it. No way... She had been quite patient and watched the calendar knowing that should would get them done.

So, last Wednesday on her birthday we took her to Claires and let her pick out her earrings. She was quite brave while holding on to her dad's arm. She smiled but was nervous. I was nervous too because I did not want to be anywhere near a needle or a earpiercing anything. If you know me at all, you know I would have fainted. So the woman is cleaning her ears with antiseptic and I start to feel faint. I quickly ran to the back of the store with Jacob and we hid until it was all over. Sarah cried on her first ear but still wanted the second one done. She did it and I had a weak tummy all day.

The End.....check out her ears....

Call me Martha

Have you ever had one someone drop by when you were just not prepared??? Well that happened this evening. My very cool cousins from Wisconsin are in town for the Thanksgiving holiday. They are visiting their parents in Mission Viejo. They wanted to come by and say hello and check out our house. They have not seen it since we moved here in 2003.

So I am sitting at the table watching this car pull into our driveway. I was more than slightly relieved when I thought that I did not recognize them. Then they got out of the car and made themselves known.

I realized who they were and that they were not going to just stop at the door. Mind you, normally that would not have mattered. BUT TODAY, our house is just a mess. I mean it is more than a mess. Clothes everywhere, cabinet doors not shut, mail on the floor, dishes in the sink, piles of laundry to do, stinky bathrooms, floor rugs that are all wadded up, toys here and there, and just a mess. Not dirty but super duper messy. I was praying that they would not ask to use the restroom.

And of all people to visit, Ken and Michele and her mother are the ones that I would have really loved to be prepared for. Not that they are looking at anything superficial, but we bought the house from Michele's cousin Diana. Ken and Michele have seen this house for many years before we ever were blessed with it. I really wanted it to be sparkly when they came. I wanted them to see how well we take care of the house we bought from Michele's cousin.

Sounds neurotic but it meant a lot to me. And, since they live in Wisconsin, I was banking on having some notice about a visit. The problem??? I was sooooo concerned with how my house looked, with where everything was, with the impression that I completely lost sight of the whole matter. They came to see us, then the house. I haven't seen Ken (my cousin) in more than 2 years and Michele I have not seen in 5 years. So any thought of warmly welcoming them into my home was cooled by my stupid selfish insecurities about my house. I dashed any hope of them feeling welcome and happy to be seen.

I clearly see how I am a "Martha". Martha was a woman in Jesus' time who was more concerned about the things I just confessed to. Jesus walked into her house ..JESUS in the flesh. JESUS CHRIST comes into her home and she is mad at her sister for not helping prepare for him. Her sister Mary probably put the broom away and spent whatever time she had with Jesus while she could. He wouldn't be there long...just a short while. This could not be a more glaring modern day parallel to Luke 10:38-42.

I am ashamed of my behavior. Ken and Michele and Mary (Michele's Mom)...please forgive me for being so ungracious. And, come back anytime! (gulp) I really mean that. Next time, kick the toys out of the way and find yourself a seat!! I love you guys.
